Emory's program is primarily designed for the student
seeking an academic career. About two thirds of our Ph.D.s receive tenure
track faculty appointments at colleges and universities. The curriculum
is structured to provide breadth of knowledge coupled with mastery of
a specific area in which the student is most interested. This training
qualifies an Emory graduate for positions in small liberal arts colleges
as well as larger, research-oriented universities. In addition, our unique
teacher training program makes our graduates particularly attractive to
institutions looking for strong college-level instructors.
Faculty members are always seeking ways to make our students better qualified
and more attractive on the job market. The Department has a formal placement
program to assist graduates in finding suitable positions. We make every
effort to place our students in jobs that correspond well with the students'
talents and interests.
Over the past several years Emory students who have desired positions
at major research institutions have been placed at such schools as: Brown
University, University of Michigan, Indiana University, University of North Carolina, University
of Massachusetts, University of Chicago, University of Colorado, Florida State University, University
of Washington, Virginia Tech, University of Nebraska, Auburn University, Georgia State University,
Southern Methodist University, Rice University, University of Iowa, Michigan
State University, University of Connecticut, Texas Tech, Mississippi State,
University of South Carolina, University of Texas at Austin, The University of Georgia, and American University. Students seeking
positions at more teaching-oriented liberal arts colleges and universities
have been placed recently at schools such as: Smith College, Georgetown,
Illinois Wesleyan University, Middlebury College, Linfield College, Lycoming College, McMurry
University, Union College, Spelman College, Trinity University, John Carroll
University and Mary Baldwin College.
Students who prefer non-academic jobs also do well in our program. Our
training in research methodology fully qualifies our graduates not only
to perform well in academic research but also to excel in applied research
settings in government agencies, corporations, consulting firms, and nonprofit
organizations.
